She has worked as a consultant for NABE since 2016, overseeing the creation of a microcredentialing process, and is the author of the professional learning pathways leading to NABE Dual Language digital badges.

Cristina Alfaro, Ph.D. is the Interim Associate Vice President for Global Affairs at San Diego State University. Dr. Alfaro is Professor and Past Chair of the Dual Language and English Learner Education Department in the College of Education where she has championed and led the largest bilingual teacher education-social justice-based program in the state of California.

This 45-minute webinar will provide an overview of how using CAL’s highly acclaimed Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education3rd edition, can help you develop or improve your DL program to ensure bilingualism, biliteracy, high academic achievement and sociocultural competence for your emergent bilingual students.

Lisa Tabaku serves as Director of Global Languages and Cultures Education at the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) where she provides technical assistance (both professional development and program evaluations) to multilingual and Dual Language programs in the U.S. and abroad.

A Pedagogy of Cultural Biliteracy (live session)
Sonia Soltero, Ph.D., DePaul University; NABE Board Member-Central Region Rep

This session explores what it means to develop biliteracy through a linguistically and culturally relevant and responsive curriculum, use of authentic literature, and meaning-based instructional approaches that engage students’ heritage and new cultures. We examine school and classroom cultural ecosystems that support the development of cultural biliteracy and connect to current societal racial and ethnic tensions.

Sonia W. Soltero is Professor and Chair of the Department of Leadership, Language, and Curriculum, former Director of the Bilingual-Bicultural Education Graduate Program at DePaul University in Chicago, and former bilingual and dual language teacher and program coordinator.

Michelle Shory and Dr. Irina McGrath are Google Certified trainers and co-creators of ELL 2.0, a website that offers tools and resources for teachers of English Learners.

Irina V. McGrath, Ph.D. works for the Kentucky Department of Education as an Education Recovery Specialist. She is also a co-director of the Louisville Writing Project (LWP) and the University of Louisville and Indiana University Southeast adjunct who teaches ESL/ENL Instruction as well as Assessment, Literature, and Cultural and Linguistic Diversity courses.

Michelle Shory, Ed.S., is a District ESL Instructional Coach in Jefferson County Public Schools, Louisville, KY. She is passionate about literacy and helped establish Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Louisville.
